Bill Richardson is an American politician. A Democrat, he served as Governor of New Mexico from 2003 to 2011. He ran for the 2008 Democratic nomination for President of the United States.
Bill Richardson is the first person of Hispanic ancestry to mount a major campaign for President of the United States. Senator Ted Cruz is the second (running for the 2016 Republican nomination for President). Candidates John McCain (who was born in Panama, of non-Hispanic descent) and Mitt Romney (whose father was born in Mexico, of non-Hispanic descent) could possibly be counted as Hispanic in a sense, though not by ancestry. Paul Laxalt, who was of Basque descent, briefly ran for the 1988 Republican nomination for President.
Bill’s paternal grandparents were William Blaney Richardson (the son of William Everett Richardson and Vesta Hodsdon) and Rosaura Ojeda Medero (the daughter of Efren Ojeda Zota and Florentina Medero Romo). Bill’s grandfather William was born in Boston, Massachusetts, of English ancestry (including roots in the United States going back to the 1600s). He was a Mayflower descendant. Bill’s grandmother Rosaura was born in Santo Domingo Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, México.
Bill’s maternal grandparents were Manuel López-Collada Marquez (the son of Manuel López-Collada and Maria Teresa Márquez) and Maria Márquez Vazconcelos (the daughter of Jesus Marquez and Maria Vazconcelos). Bill’s grandfather Manuel was born in Villaviciosa, Asturias, Spain. Bill’s grandmother Maria was born in Oaxaca de Juárez, Oaxaca, Mexico.
