Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer of polar regions. He led the Antarctic expedition (1910–12) that was the first to reach the South Pole, on 14 December 1911. In 1926, he was the first expedition leader to be recognized without dispute as having reached the North Pole. He is also known as having the first expedition to traverse the Northwest Passage (1903–06) in the Arctic. He was the son of Jens Engebreth Amundsen and Hanna Henrikke Gustava Henriette Gustava Sahlquist.
Roald’s paternal grandfather Ole Amundsen (the son of Amund Olsen Utgård and Kirstine Larsdatter Schoug Engebretsen). Amund was the son of Ole Olsen Utgård and Annichen Nielsdatter. Kirstine was the daughter of Lars Engebretsen and Karen Larsdatter Schoug.
Roald’s paternal grandmother was Anne Kirstine Jensdatter Gravning (the daughter of Jens Johannessen Gravningen and Ane Jonsdatter). Jens was the son of Johannes Jensen Gravningen and Helena Sivertsdatter Løkkeberg. Ane Jonsdatter was the daughter of Jon Evensen Brenne and Oliane Nielsdatter Kile.
Roald’s maternal grandfather was Gustav Sahlquist (the son of Lauritz Leganger Sahlquist and Anne Marie Meer). Lauritz was the son of Gustavus Henningsen Sahlquist and Anne Marie Lydersdatter. Anne Meer was the daughter of Johan Henrich Gotlib Meer and Margaretha Hielm Jensdatter Berg.
Roald’s maternal grandmother was Kirsten Wright (the daughter of Lars Wright and Johanne Christine Kilemann). Lars was the son of Andreas Christian Larsen Wright and Johanne Pedersdatter Lindseth. Andreas’ paternal grandfather, Realf Christian Wright, was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. Roald’s great-grandmother Johanne was the daughter of Rasmus Jenssøn Kjelmann and Johanne Cathrine Hansdatter.
