Martin Schulz is a German politician. A member of the Social Democratic Party, he has served as President of the European Parliament since 2014.
His father, Albert Schulz, a police officer, came from the Saarland and grew up in a mining family who had social-democratic tendencies, while his mother, Clara, from a middle class background, was a founding member of the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) in her hometown, Würselen.
