At the time of his death, he was Dean Ireland’s Professor of the Exegesis of Holy Scripture at the University of Oxford. His parents, Esther Love (Bradford) and George Caird, came from Dundee, Scotland. G. B. was the father of stage director and writer John Caird, and the paternal grandfather of musician Eliza Doolittle. He was married to Viola Mary Newport.
