Leonid Brezhnev was the General Secretary of the Central Committee (CC) of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), presiding over the country from 1964 until his death in 1982. He was the son of Ilya Yakovlevich Brezhnev and Natalia Denisovna (Mazalova) Brezhneva. He was married to Viktoria Petrovna Denisova.
Leonid’s ethnicity was specified as Ukrainian in some documents, including his passport, and Russian in others. It is unclear if this is accurate.
Leonid’s paternal grandfather was Yakov Maximovich Brezhnev (the son of Maxim Brezhnev).
Leonid’s maternal grandfather was Denis Mazalov.
