Andrew Jackson was an American politician. As a member of the National Union Party, and then the Democratic Party, he served as the 17th President of the United States, from April 15, 1865 to March 4, 1869. He was previously the 16th Vice President of the United States, from March 4, 1865 to April 15, 1865, and took over as President upon Abraham Lincoln’s death. He was previously also a U.S. Senator from Tennessee, from October 8, 1857 to March 4, 1862, and again from March 4, 1875 to July 31, 1875, a Military Governor of Tennessee, from March 12, 1862 to March 4, 1865, the 15th Governor of Tennessee, from October 17, 1853 to November 3, 1857, and a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Tennessee, from March 4, 1843 to March 3, 1853. He was also a candidate for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1860 and 1868.
President Johnson was the son of Mary (McDonough) and Jacob Johnson.
President Johnson’s paternal grandfather was Andrew William Johnston (the son of Arthur Johnson and Margaret Phares). Arthur was the son of John Johnston, who was born in New Leslie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Margaret was the daughter of John Phares, whose mother was Scottish, and of Agnes Margaret Johnson.
President Johnson’s paternal grandmother was Hannah Henkel (the daughter of Johann Justus Hinckel and Maria Magdalena Eschmann). Johann was born in Mosbach, Kurpfalz, Germany, the son of The Rev. Anthonius Jacobus Henckel and Maria Elisabeth Dentzer. Maria Magdalena was the daughter of Abraham Eschmann/Ashman, who was of German origin, and of Elizabeth Ellis.
President Johnson’s maternal grandfather was Andrew C. McDonough (the son of Andrew McDonough and Mary Odeon). President Johnson’s great-grandfather Andrew was born in Ballyclare, Tyrone, Ireland, the son of Andrew McDonough.
President Johnson’s maternal grandmother was Mary Ruth Lindley (the daughter of James Lindley and Mary Cox). James was the son of Thomas Lindley, who was born in County Wicklow, Leinster, Ireland, and of Ruth Hadley, who was born in Moate, County Westmeath, Leinster. President Johnson’s great-grandmother Mary was the daughter of William Cox, who was born in England, and of Catherine Kinkey.
