Ervin is a Olympic gold medalist in the sport of swimming. He won the Olympic gold medal in 2000 and 2016 in the 50 meter freestyle event.
He was born to a mother of Ashkenazi Jewish descent and an African American father. Some sources state that his father has Native American heritage, however this is not confirmed. He is the first American swimmer of African American descent to make the US Olympic team. He is a practicing Zen Buddhist.
