Edmund Barton was an Australian politician. He served as Prime Minister of Australia, from 1 January, 1901 to 24 September, 1903. He was also Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, from 3 January, 1883 to 31 January, 1887, Leader of the Protectionist Party, from 1 January, 1901 to 24 September, 1903, Minister for External Affairs, from 1 January, 1901 to 24 September, 1903, and Justice of the High Court, from 5 October, 1903 to 7 January, 1920, among other duties.
Prime Minister Barton was the son of Mary Louisa (Whydah) and William Giles Barton, a stockbroker. His parents were English immigrants, from London, England.
Prime Minister Barton’s paternal grandparents were Edward Barton (the son of Edward Barton and Elizabeth) and Sarah Gray.
Prime Minister Barton’s maternal grandparents were Edward Whydah and Sophia Synett (the daughter of Thomas Sinnett and Mary). Thomas was the son of Thomas Sinnett and Jane.
