Family Background: Guglielmo Marconi was an Italian physician. He was known of his pioneering work on long-distance radio transmission and for his development of Marconi’s law and a radio telegraph system. He shared the 1909 Nobel Prize (tag) in Physics with Karl Ferdinand Braun.
Guglielmo was born to Giuseppe Marconi, a wealthy Italian landowner born in Capugnano, Province of Bologna, Emilia Romagna, and Anna Fenwick “Annie” Jameson, who was from County Wexford, Ireland. Annie was of Scottish descent.
Guglielmo’s paternal grandparents were Domenico Marconi and Teresa.
Guglielmo’s maternal grandfather was Dublin-born Andrew Jameson (the son John Jameson and Margaret “Peggie” Haig). Andrew’s parents were both born in Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland. Andrew’s father, John Jameson, a lawyer, was the the founder and owner of John Jameson and Son Irish Whiskey, and was the son of William Jameson and Helen Horne. Margaret “Peggie” Haig was the daughter of John Haig and Margaret Stein. John Haig was the founder of John Haig & Co. , a prominent distilling company. Margaret’s family also owned distilleries at Kilbagie and Kennetpans, near Alloa in the Lowlands, Scotland.
Guglielmo’s maternal grandmother was named Margaret.
