Ivan is the son of Kata and Luka Rakitić. His parents are both Croatian, although his mother is from Bosnia. Ivan’s father is from Sikirevci, Croatia, and his family is Šokci. Ivan’s mother is from a small village near Žepče, Bosnia and Herzegovina. His parents moved to Switzerland due to the growing tension in Yugoslavia before the war after his father got a job at a building site in Möhlin, Switzerland.
