His paternal grandfather was Louis Van Sant, the son of Benjamin Franklin Van Sant, who was of Dutch and English ancestry, and Frances Lee Hudgins, who was the daughter of Daughter of Thomas William Hudgins and Leander Wesley Loving.

His paternal grandmother was Dorothy Greene, who was of English and possibly other ancestry.

His maternal grandparents are unknown, but his mother’s maiden name is Seay, which is an Irish surname.
