Emilio Aguinaldo was a Filipino revolutionary and politician. He had served as the first President of the Philippines, from January 23, 1899 to March 23, 1901.
He was the son of Carlos Aguinaldo y de los Santos (or Carlos de los Santos Aguinaldo in Filipino, later changed his maternal family name to Jamir) and Trinidad Fami Valerio y Villanueva (or Trinidad Villanueva Fami Valerio in Filipino, later changed her paternal family name to Famy). He was married to Hilaria del Rosario y Reyes (or Hilaria Reyes del Rosario in Filipino), of Imus, Cavite, and to María Agoncillo y Reyes (or María Reyes Agoncillo in Filipino), of Taal, Batangas.
Some sources reported his date of birth as March 22, 1869, but his baptismal record states that he was three days old when he was baptized on March 29, 1869, making March 26, 1869 as his date of birth. Also, he was listed as a “mestizo de sangley” on church records.
Emilio’s paternal grandparents were Eugenio Aguinaldo and María de los Santos (later Jamir). Eugenio was Ilocano. María changed her family name due to a decree issued by Governor-General of the Philippines Narciso Clavería concerning the family names of the Filipino natives.
Emilio’s maternal grandparents were Joaquín Fami Valerio and Simona Villanueva.
