John C. Frémont, nicknamed The Pathfinder, was an American explorer, politician, and soldier. A Republican, he was a U.S. Senator from California, from September 10, 1850 to March 3, 1851, and a Territorial Governor of Arizona, from October 6, 1878 to October 11, 1881.
He was the Republican Party’s nominee for President of the United States in 1856. He was the Republican Party’s first nominee for President, having been nominated two years after the party’s creation in 1854 as an anti-slavery party.
In the 1840s, he led four expeditions into the American West, earning him his nickname The Pathfinder.
He was the son of Anne Beverley (Whiting) Pryor and Charles Frémon. His father was French-Canadian. His mother had English ancestry. His wife was writer and political activist Jessie Benton Frémont, whose own father, Thomas Hart Benton, was a politician, who was a U.S. Senator from Missouri, from 1821 to 1851.
John’s maternal grandfather was Thomas Whiting (the son of Henry Whiting and Anne Beverley). Henry was the son of Henry Whiting and Apphia Hughes. Anne was the daughter of Peter Beverley, who was born in Virginia, to English parents, from Yorkshire, and of Elizabeth Peyton.
John’s maternal grandmother was Elizabeth Seawell (the daughter of John Seawell and Jane Boswell). John was the son of Joseph Seawell and Elizabeth. Jane was the daughter of Thomas Boswell.
