Zola was born in Phoenix, Arizona, and grew up in Merrill, Wisconsin. Her ancestors were ethnic Germans from the Odessa area in Ukraine.
An article in the magazine Time Out New York described Zola as having Russian and Slovenian ancestry. It is not clear if this is accurate.
