Barry Goldwater was an American politician. He served as a U.S. Senator from Arizona (1953-1965, 1969-1987), and was the Republic nominee for President of the United States in 1964. He was the son of Barry M. Goldwater and Hattie Josephine (Williams).
Barry Goldwater was the first person of Jewish heritage to be nominated for either President or Vice President on a major party ticket in the United States (Joe Lieberman (in 2000) and John Kerry (in 2004) are the other two). Barry’s father was Jewish (of Polish Jewish and Russian Jewish descent), and Barry’s mother, who was of English ancestry, was Christian. Barry was raised an Episcopalian, though sometimes referred to himself as Jewish. His second wife, Susan Shaffer Wechsler (married from 1992 to his 1998), was a convert to Judaism (for reasons unrelated to her marriage to Barry).
Barry’s paternal grandparents were Michael Goldwasser (the son of Hirsch Goldwasser and Scheindel-Chawe/Fravda) and Sarah Nathan (the daughter of Moses Nathan and Hannah). Michael was born in Konin, Poznanskiego, Poland. Sarah was born in London, England, to parents from Russia.
Barry’s maternal grandparents were Robert Royal Williams (the son of John Asbury Williams and Ann Alfrey) and Laura Josephine Smith (the daughter of William Coats Smith and Sarah Liming).
Barry’s paternal great-grandparents, Hirsch Goldwasser and Scheindel-Chawe/Fravda, were also the paternal great-great-great-great-grandparents of actor Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Thus, Barry and Christopher are second cousins, three times removed
