Shirley was the daughter of Geraldine Bugby and Leslie Hardy Jackson. She was married to literary critic Stanley Edgar Hyman, until her death, with whom she had four children.

Shirley’s maternal grandfather was John Stephenson. John was a prominent lawyer in San Francisco, and a Superior Court Judge in Alaska.

Shirley’s great-great-grandfather, Samuel Charles Bugbee, was an architect, whose designs included the homes of industrialists Leland Stanford and Charles Crocker, and the Mendocino Presbyterian Church.

Shirley’s maternal grandmother was named Mimi.
