William Sulzer was an American lawyer and politician. He was nicknamed “Plain Bill Sulzer.” A member of the Democratic Party, he served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York, from March 4, 1895 to December 31, 1912, and Governor of New York, January 1, 1913 to October 17, 1913.
He was The American Party’s nominee for President of the United States in 1916. He was also a candidate of the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1912.
William was the son of Mary (Cooney) and Thomas Sulzer. His father was German and his mother was Irish. His brother, Charles August Sulzer, was also a Democratic politician, who was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Alaska Territory, from March 4, 1917 to January 7, 1919, and again, from March 4, 1919 to April 15, 1919. He was raised on the family farm.
William was married to Clara Rodelheim.
