iLoveMakonnen is an American rapper and singer. He is best known for his hit song “Tuesday” featuring Drake. He was named after Emporer of Ethiopia Haile Selassie whose birth name was Tafari Makonnen.
His older half-brother, Kris Johnson, is a professional basketball player. Kris is the son of professional basketball player, Marques Johnson.
Makonnen is the son of Errol Sheran and Sabrina Tate. He was raised mostly in South Los Angeles by his father who is a Belizean immigrant. Makonnen also spent part of his childhood in Atlanta, Georgia living with his mother who is African-American.
Makonnen’s paternal grandparents were Lester Sheran/Beeks (the son of Owen Sheran and Primilina Beeks) and Daphne Heusner who both emigrated to the U.S. from Belize, at the time a British colony named British Honduras. Daphne’s father likely was Karl Heusner who emigrated to Belize from Germany. Daphne’s mother, Florence Humes, was Belizean.
Makonnen’s maternal grandmother was Virginia Caldwell (the daughter of Godfrey Caldwell and Walter Mae Wilson). Virginia was born in Florida. Godfrey and Walter Mae were born in Georgia. Godfrey’s parents, Ernest and Ida Caldwell were born in Georgia. Walter Mae’s parents, Walter Wilson and Bessie Mitchell, were born in Georgia.
Makonnen has described his ethnicity as “African American, Indian, Irish, Belgian, German, Chinese”. Sheran can be a South Asian surname and there is a sizable South Asian community in Belize. No Irish, Belgian or Chinese ancestry can be verified.
