Rawiri Waititi is New Zealand politician and activist. He is the co-leader of the Māori Party (Te Pāti Māori) alongside Debbie Ngarewa-Packer since 28 October 2020, he was preceded by his father-in-law John Tamihere. Rawiri was previously affiliated with the Labour Party from 2014 to 2016. He has been a Member of Parliament since 17 October 2020. He is also a Ringatū minister.
Rawiri is the son of Winston Waititi and Florence Taitua. He has five children with his wife Kiri Tamihere. Rawiri is of Te Whānau a Apanui, Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Awa, Te Arawa, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāi Tai, Te Whakatōhea, Ngāi Te Rangi and Ngāti Ranginui iwi.
Through his father’s side Rawiri is the nephew of Dame June Mariu (nee Waititi), great-nephew of Hoani Waititi and 3rd cousin (once removed) of director Taika Waititi and a relative of Rob Ruha.
Ancestry/Genealogy:
Rawiri’s paternal grandfather was Manihera Waititi, son of Kūaha Te Manihera Waititi and Kirimatao Heremia Kerei (daughter of Hoani Kerei and Te Kerehi Heremia). Kūaha was the son of Te Manihera Waititi and Te Paora Awhimate Rewharewha (daughter of Hohua Rewharewha and Makao). Te Manihera Waititi was the son of Haimona Waititi and Horiana.
Rawiri’s paternal grandmother was Dorothy Tihore daughter of Matehaere Patihana Tihore and Alice Ann Gill (daughter of Henry Gill and Ann). Alice emigrated from Kettlewell, in England, to New Zealand in 1909.
