Dick Clark was an American television presenter and radio personality best known for hosting American Bandstand from 1956 to 1989. He is viewed as a cultural icon owing to his tenure coinciding with the explosion of Rock and Roll. The show was among the first in which both black and white people performed on the same stage, and was also among the first that allowed desegregated audiences.
In 1973, he created the American Music Awards show.
Dick was the son of Richard Augustus Clark and Julia Fuller Barnard. He was born in Bronxville and raised in Mount Vernon, both in New York’s Westchester County.
In 1952 Clark married Barbara Mallery, a marriage that produced one son. They divorced in 1961 and the following year Clark married Loretta Martin. The couple had two children, one of which was the presenter Duane Clark. They divorced in 1971. From 1977 until his death, Clark was married to Kari Wigton.
His paternal grandfather was Herbert W. Clark (the son of Augustus Clark and Anna M. Lovett). Herbert was born in New York. Augustus was the son of Reuben Clark and Julia Crosby.
His paternal grandmother was Maud S. Wagstaff (the daughter of James Wagstaff and Anna Sully). Maud was born in New York to English parents.
His maternal grandfather was Charles Fuller Barnard (the son of George Barnard and Jane Sophia Fuller). Charles was born in New York. George was the son of George Barnard and Julia Ann Madge. Jane was the daughter of Charles Fuller and Aliva Cole.
His maternal grandmother was Anna Mae Aldridge (the daughter of David Aldridge). Anna was born in New York to an English father.
