J. Smith-Cameron is the daughter of Mary and achitect Richard Sharp Smith. She was raised in Greenville, South Carolina. She was credited as “J. Smith,” but later added her grandmother’s name Cameron to avoid confusion with another actor. She is married to playwright, writer, and director Kenneth Lonergan, with whom she has a daughter.

J. Smith-Cameron’s paternal grandfather was architect Richard Sharp Smith (the son of Jones Smith and Saleta Watterson). Richard was born in Yorkshire, England, and moved to the U.S. in 1882. He was the supervising architect for George W. Vanderbilt’s Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. He oversaw the receipt of all materials, and the estate’s construction.

J. Smith-Cameron’s paternal grandmother was named Isabella Cameron. Isabella was Scottish. She was a member of the household staff as Biltmore.

J. Smith-Cameron’s maternal grandfather was surnamed Rome.
