His mother was a schoolteacher, and his father, who died prematurely, was a railway worker. Little is known of Maurice’s father, except that he was French. Maurice carried his mother’s surname, Louise Tillet, throughout his life. Louise’s known ancestors all come from the northern part of France. Her father, Armand Anatole Tillet, came from a winegrowing family from Charly in Picardy. Her mother, Louise Alzire Gerant, was from the rural Deux-Sèvres region near the Atlantic coast.
Maurice suffered from Acromegaly, a rare disease.
