Mark Carney is a Canadian politician and economist. He has served as Prime Minister of Canada, since March 14, 2025. He has also been Leader of the Liberal Party, since March 9, 2025; as well as, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada, from August 10, 2003 to November 15, 2004, Governor of the Bank of Canada, from February 1, 2008 to June 3, 2013, Chair of the Financial Stability Board, from November 4, 2011 to November 26, 2018, Governor of the Bank of England, from July 1, 2013 to March 15, 2020, and a Member of Parliament for Nepean (ON), since April 28, 2025.
Prime Minister Carney is the son of Verlie Margaret (Kemper) and Robert James Carney, a high school principal, Professor of Educational Foundations at the University of Alberta, and Liberal political candidate. He was raised in Laurier Heights, Edmonton, Alberta, from the age of six. Prime Minister Carney is married to British economist and climate policy expert Diana Fox Carney, with whom he has four children.
Having been born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, Prime Minister Carney is the northernmost-born Canadian-born Prime Minister of Canada, by a considerable margin. Prime Minister Carney is also one of three Prime Ministers of Canada to have been born west of Ontario, along with Joe Clark, who was born in Alberta, and Kim Campbell, who was born in British Columbia.
Prime Minister Carney’s paternal grandfather was Robert Carney (the son of Patrick Carney and Bridget Moran). Robert was born in Aille, County Mayo, Ireland.
Prime Minister Carney’s paternal grandmother was named Honor Moran. Honor was born in Mace, County Mayo, Ireland.
Prime Minister Carney’s maternal grandfather was John Anthony Kemper (the son of John J. Kemper and Mary Elizabeth Betzhold). Prime Minister Carney’s grandfather John was born in Dallas, Texas, U.S. Prime Minister Carney’s great-grandfather John was born in Köln, Rhineland, Prussia, the son of Johannes Kemper and Anna Gertrud Christes. Mary Elizabeth was born in Ohio, of German origin, the daughter of Joseph Betzhold and Philomena Valerius.
Prime Minister Carney’s maternal grandmother was Margaret Frances Gaffney (the daughter of Patrick Gaffney and Mary Ferguson Stewart). Margaret was born in Northfield, Nanaimo, British Columbia. Patrick was born in County Cavan, Ireland. Mary was born in Pennsylvania, U.S., of Scottish descent, the daughter of Charles Gillespie Stewart and Caroline Reid Williamson.
Prime Minister Carney is one of two Prime Ministers of Canada to have a significant amount of ancestry from somewhere other than the British Isles or France, being of one quarter German descent. John Diefenbaker, who was of one half German ancestry, is the other.
There is an internet rumour that Prime Minister Carney is a nephew of real estate developer Fried Kemper, who was the stepfather of previous Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This is not accurate. Prime Minister Carney’s grandfather, John Anthony Kemper, was born in 1877, in Dallas, Texas, and died in 1961. Prime Minister Trudeau’s former stepfather’s father, John/Joaquim Kemper, was born in Reetz, Germany, in 1921, and died in Ottawa, Ontario, in 2024, at the age of 103. As with many people of the same surname, it is possible the two men shared a common ancestry to some degree.
