Georges Bizet was French composer of the Romantic era, known for his operas. He is most famous for his work Carmen (1875), his final opera. His works also include the operas Les pêcheurs de perles, La jolie fille de Perth, and Djamileh, and the incidental music for the play L’Arlésienne.
Georges was the son of Aimée Marie Louise Léopoldine Joséphine (Delsarte) and Adolphe Armand Bizet, a hairdresser, wigmaker, and singing teacher. His father was born in Rouen, Seine-Inférieure. His mother was born in Cambrai, Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, to a cultured and musical family. His uncle was singer, orator, and coach François Delsarte, who performed for royal courts. He was baptized as “Georges” in March 1840. Georges was admitted to the Conservatoire de Paris at the age of nine in 1848.
Georges was married to salonnière Geneviève Halévy (Marie-Geneviève Raphaëlle Halévy), until his death, with whom he had a son, physician and businessperson Jacques Bizet. Geneviève was from a Jewish family, of Ashkenazi and Sephardi descent. She was the daughter of opera composer Fromental Halévy, a leading figure of 19th century French music; Georges had been a pupil of Fromental. Her uncle was civil servant, historian, and dramatist Léon Halévy, her aunt was writer Eugénie Foa, her grandfather was Hebrew-language author and cantor/hazzan Élie Halévy, and her cousin was author and playwright Ludovic Halévy. Georges himself was sometimes said to have been of Jewish heritage, though this is not accurate.
Georges’ paternal grandfather was Guillaume Michel Jerome Bizet (the son of Louis Guillaume Bizet/Biset and Marie Anne Elisabeth Gaumont). Guillaume was born in Yvetot, Seine-Maritime, Normandy. Louis was born in Yvetot, the son of Jerome Biset and Catherine Talbot. Marie Anne was also born in Yvetot.
Georges’ paternal grandmother was Catherine Geneviève Cornu (the daughter of Constant Cornu and Geneviève Chapelle). Catherine was born in Yvetot, Seine-Maritime, Normandy.
Georges’ maternal grandfather was Jean Nicolas Toussaint Delsarte (the daughter of Nicolas Joseph Delsarte and Marie Agnès Deloge). Jean was born in Solesmes, Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Georges’ great-grandfather Nicolas was born in Solesmes, and was a doctor. He was the son of Nicolas François Delsarte and Marie Barbe Beaudoux. Georges’ great-grandmother Marie Agnès was the daughter of Toussaint Deloge and Marie-Antoinette Ménard.
Georges’ maternal grandmother was Aimée Albertine Roland (the daughter of Pierre Joseph Félix Roland and Marie Louise Françoise Joseph/Rosalie Dunan). Aimée was born in Cambrai, Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Pierre was born in Saint-Omer, Artois, the son of Pierre François Joseph Roland and Marie Antoinette Boquillon. Georges’ great-grandmother Marie Louise was born in Carly, Artois.
