Joachim Trier is a Danish-Norwegian filmmaker. He has directed the films Procter, Reprise, Oslo, August 31st; Louder Than Bombs, Thelma (2017), The Worst Person in the World, and Sentimental Value. He co-wrote all of his films with Eskil Vogt. He also co-directed the documentary film The Other Munch, with his brother Emil Trier.
His father, Jacob Trier, was a Danish sound technician, who worked on the Norwegian film The Pinchcliffe Grand Prix. His mother was Norwegian. His maternal grandfather was filmmaker Erik Løchen. Joachim was raised in Oslo, Norway.
On his father’s side, he is the great-great-great-grandson of industrialist Troels Marstrand (Troels Caspar Daniel Marstrand), whose father was mechanician and inventor Nicolai Jacob Marstrand, and whose brother was painter and illustrator Wilhelm Marstrand.
Joachim’s paternal grandfather was Ernst Trier (the son of Troels Trier and Karen Dahl Pederson/Pedersen). Troels was born in Vallekilde Højskole, Vallekilde, the son of Ernst/Salomon Johannes Trier and Julie Vilhelmine Marstrand. Joachim’s great-great-grandfather Ernst was Jewish, the son of Jacob Stephan/Salomon Trier and Bella Johanne Marie Nathanson; his family traced back to Germany, including Hamburg. Joachim’s great-grandmother Julie was the daughter of Troels Marstrand, who was of part Norwegian descent. Joachim’s great-grandmother Karen was the daughter of Niels Pedersen and Caroline Margrethe Rasmussen.
Joachim’s paternal grandmother was Agnes Elizabeth Schülein (the daughter of Albert Victor Michael Schũlein and Ellen Margrethe Sahmel).
Joachim’s maternal grandfather was Erik Formo Løchen (the son of Arne Løchen and Valgjerd Formo). Erik was born in Oslo, Norway, and was artistic director of Norsk Film, from 1981 to 1983, and a director and screenwriter, known for his work Remonstrance. Joachim’s great-grandfather Arne was born in Stange, Hedmark, the son of Anton Løchen and Berthe.
Joachim’s maternal grandmother was the daughter of Ragnar Emil Bjerke and Aslaug Strandenæs.
