José Carreras is a Spanish operatic tenor, and humanitarian. He has often vocalized the works of Donizetti, Verdi, and Puccini. He performed as part of operatic singing trio The Three Tenors, from 1990 to 2003, with Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. He founded the José Carreras International Leukaemia Foundation/La Fundació Internacional Josep Carreras per a la Lluita contra la Leucèmia.
José is the son of Antònia Coll i Saigi, who ran a hair salon, and Josep Carreras i Soler, a teacher and traffic policeman. His family moved to Argentina in 1951, returning to Barcelona a year later. José has two children with his former wife Mercedes Pérez. His nephew is conductor David Giménez Carreras, who has been Music Director of the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès and principal guest conductor of the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra; and has conducted some of José’s concerts.
