The Lowells were well-known Boston Brahmin, whose members included noted clergymen, authors, judges, and military figures. Robert had partial Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry on both sides of his family, tracing to both Rhode Island and North Carolina.

Paternally, Robert was a first cousin, twice removed, of railroad executive, foundryman, and Union Army general Charles Russell Lowell; and a third cousin, once removed, of imagist school poet Amy Lowell. Her nephew, Daniel’s son, was Republican party politician Daniel Read Anthony, Jr., who was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Kansas, from May 23, 1907 to March 3, 1929. Her great-niece was journalist, writer, activist, and substance abuse counselor Susan B. Anthony II (Susan Brownell Anthony II).

During her youth, she added “B.” to her name, as interest in middle names grew across America.

Her siblings included educator and women’s education pioneer Catharine Beecher; dyspeptic minister William Henry Beecher; theologian Edward Beecher; Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer, speaker, and abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher, whose wife was author Eunice White Beecher; minister, author, and religious hymn composer Charles Beecher; leader, lecturer, and suffragist social activist Isabella Beecher Hooker, whose husband was lawyer and judge John Hooker; Congregationlist preacher and school principal Thomas K. Beecher; and Congregationalist minister and Union Army colonel James Chaplin Beecher.

She was married to Biblical scholar Calvin Ellis Stowe, until his death, with whom she had seven children.
