Robert Borden was a Canadian lawyer and politician. He served as the eighth Prime Minister of Canada, from October 10, 1911 to July 10, 1920. His party membership was Liberal (1867-1891), then Conservative (1891-1917), then Unionist (1917-1922), and then Conservative again (1922-1937).
Prime Minister Borden was the son of Eunice Jane (Laird) and Andrew Borden. He was of English descent. His ancestry on both sides of his family led back to English immigrants to Colonial America (specifically New England) in the 1600s.
Prime Minister Borden’s paternal grandparents were Perry Borden, Jr. (the son of Perry Borden, Sr. and Mary Ellis) and Lavinia Fuller. Perry, Sr. was born in Newport, Rhode Island, U.S. Mary was born in London, Connecticut, also in the United States.
Prime Minister Borden’s maternal grandparents were John Laird and Julia Lathrop (the daughter of John Lathrop and Eunice Denison). John Lathrop was born in New Haven, Connecticut, U.S. Eunice was the daughter of prominent soldier and political figure Robert Denison.
