James A. Garfield was an American politician. A Republican, he served as the 20th President of the United States, from March 4, 1881 to September 19, 1881, when he was assassinated. He was previously a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio, from March 4, 1863 to November 8, 1880.
President Garfield was the son of Eliza (Ballou) and Abram Garfield.
