Martin Van Buren was an American politician. He served as the eighth President of the United States, from March 4, 1837 to March 4, 1841. He was previously the eighth Vice President of the United States, from March 4, 1833 to March 4, 1837, a United States Minister to the United Kingdom, from August 8, 1831 to April 4, 1832, the United States Secretary of State, from March 28, 1829 to May 23, 1831, the ninth Governor of New York, from January 1, 1829 to March 12, 1829, and a United States Senator from New York, from March 4, 1821 to December 20, 1828. He was a member of the Democratic-Republican Party before 1825, and a member of the Democratic Party from 1828 to 1848. He received an electoral vote for Vice President of the United States in 1824, was the Democratic Party’s nominee for President of the United States in 1840, was a candidate for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1844, and was the Free Soil Party’s nominee for President of the United States in 1848.
President Van Buren was the son of Maria (Hoes) and Abraham Martensen van Buren.
President Van Buren’s paternal grandparents were Marten Pieterse Van Buren (the son of Pieter Martensen van Buren and Ariaantje Barentse Meindersen) and Dirkje Van Alstyne (the daughter of Abraham Jansen Van Alstyne and Marritje Mateuisse Van Deursen).
President Van Buren’s maternal grandparents were Johannes Dircksen Hoes (the son of Dirck Janse Hoes and Elizabeth Wyngaart) and Jannetje Laurense Van Schaick (the daughter of Laurens Van Schaick and Jannetje Oothout).
