Lawrence Ferlinghetti is an American poet, painter, and liberal activist. He is the co-founder of City Lights Booksellers & Publishers.
Lawrence is the son of Clemence Albertine (Mendes-Monsanto) and Carlo/Charles Ferlinghetti. His father was an Italian immigrant, from Chiari, Province of Brescia, Lombardy. His mother was born in New York, to parents from New Jersey, or to a father from the West Indies (likely the Virgin Islands) and a mother from France, depending on the census. The Mendes-Monsanto family is of Sephardi Jewish origin.
