André Rieu is a Dutch violinist, conductor, and showman. He founded pops orchestra the Johann Strauss Orchestra in 1987, of which he is the principal conductor. He has performed at the Vrijthof in Maastricht, as well as worldwide, often in stadium tours.
André is the son of Alice Christina Maria (Kleijntjes) and Andries Antonie Rieu, who was conductor of the Maastricht Symphony Orchestra. His father was born in Haarlem and his mother was from Bussum, both in Noord-Holland. He studied violin from the age of five. He is married to language teacher Marjorie Kochmann, with whom he has two children, including producer Pierre Rieu. André speaks Dutch, English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish.
