Plácido Domingo is a Spanish opera singer, conductor, and arts administrator. He was initially a lirico-spinto tenor, later moving to dramatic roles. He has recorded over 100 complete operas, and performed in Italian, French, German, Spanish, English, and Russian. He has starred in the opera films Cavalleria rusticana, Pagliacci, La Traviata (1982), Carmen (1984), and Otello (1986), had voice roles in the films Moulin Rouge! (2001), Beverly Hills Chihuahua, and The Book of Life; and was general manager of the Los Angeles Opera. He performed as part of operatic singing trio The Three Tenors, from 1990 to 2003, with José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti.
Plácido is the son of Plácido Domingo Ferrer, a zarzuela baritone, and Pepita Embil (born Josefa Embil Echániz), a Basque soprano, who was known as the “Queen of Zarzuela.” His parents often toured together, and starred in zarzuela and operetta productions in Spain and Latin America. Plácido’s father was born in Zaragoza, Spain, where his own parents ran a restaurant; he had played violin from childhood, and performed for opera and zarzuela orchestras. Plácido’s mother was born in Getaria, Gipuzkoa, in the Basque Country of Spain.
Plácido’s parents had toured Latin America during his childhood, and moved to Mexico in 1949, where they started a zarzuela company and troupe, the Domingo-Embil Company. Plácido was raised mostly in Mexico City.
Plácido is married to Mexican opera soprano, stage director, and designer Marta Domingo (born Marta Ornelas). He has a son, photographer José Plácido “Joe” Domingo Guerra, with his former wife Ana María Guerra Cué; and two children, including Mexican-Spanish singer, songwriter, and record producer Plácido Domingo, Jr., with Marta. He has lived in Mexico, the U.S., and Europe.
Plácido’s paternal grandfather was Pedro Domingo Treserres (the son of José Mariano Domingo Rosa and Maria Gracia Francisca Tresserra Bou). Pedro was from Tordera, Catalonia. José was born on the Balearic Islands, the son of José Domingo Rieró and Maria Rosa Ventura.
Plácido’s paternal grandmother was named María Ferrer Ripol/Ricol. María was from La Codoñera, Teruel, Aragon.
Plácido’s maternal grandfather was Arturo Miguel Embil y Lazcano (the son of Francisco María Embil Macazaga and Manuela Josefa Lazcano Iraolagoitia). Arturo was born in Getaria, Gipuzkoa, Basque Country, and was a church organist. Francisco was born in Zarauz, Gipuzkoa, the son of Pedro Manuel Embil Iturzaeta and María Joaquina Macazaga Echániz. Manuela was born in Askizu, Gipuzkoa, the daughter of José Agustín María Lazcano Bonechea and María Carmen Iraolagoitia Arriola.
Plácido’s maternal grandmother was Canuta Germana Echániz Ostolaza (the daughter of Sebastián Echániz Echezarreta and Josefa Ignacia Ostolaza Idala). Germana was born in Guetaria, Gipuzkoa, Basque Country. Sebastián was born in Guetaria, the son of Juan José Lorenzo Echániz Solaberrieta and María Jesús Echezarreta Alcorta. Josefa was born in Guetaria, the daughter of José Mateo Ostolaza Gorriti and María Agustina Idala Oliden.
